Maple Grove, Ohio. 1977. You work the night shift at the Friendship Hotline, 0100.
One phone. Six screens. It's ringing. Please pick up.
Fire? Call the fire department. Burglar? Call the police. Everything else — the things you don't know how to handle once everyone's gone home — call 0100.
The line has been dead for twelve days. Tonight it opens again, and it's your shift. The town still remembers the number. Some of them have been waiting.
Every call comes from
somewhere in town.
The town's cameras hang on the wall of the booth. The caller says they're at home. You can check whether they really are.
The cameras have picture. No sound.

Whatever you say tonight, the whole town knows by morning.
The phone rings. Pick up. They ask the questions everyone should already know the answer to.
However you answer, that's what they do, and they pass it on. The same sentence lands differently on different people.
Six screens; zoom in for details. What you see on a screen can become one more thing you're able to say on the phone.
The switchboard is old and leaky. Two calls can merge into one receiver. You say one thing; both of them hear it.
Some questions can't wait long. Not answering is an answer too.
Who, when, where, and what they said, all on file. The file records claims, not the truth.
The shift is long and you'll get drowsy. Drink your coffee. The phone won't wait while you sleep.
Every morning, the paper prints what last night's answers led to.
The booth lights flicker on, the six screens warm up one by one. On the desk: a phone, a pot of coffee, the shift file.
A red light. You pick up, hear them out, and choose what to say.
The phone is still ringing. Look first, or answer first?
Your eyelids get heavy. Half a pot of coffee left.
Dawn, and the paper arrives. It reports what happened last night. Some of it, you caused.
